When I joined Shortlands Golf Club back in 2017 I never thought that someday I would be the Captain of this wonderful club.
Born and bred down the road in Bellingham, I started playing tennis at around 12 years old at nearby Catford Wanderers around 1995 and continued this for over 20 years, playing weekly, and also captaining the first team in North Kent LTA Division’s and also having a number of board roles.
I started swinging a golf club with mates around 15 years ago and with a set of cheap MacGregor golf clubs on local courses, only around 4-5 times a year, badly, but the tennis was number one and I didn’t think anything would come of it as a regular sport for me for a long time. I started my own IT business back in 2011 and I found myself having the opportunity to play corporately (or as I saw them back then, freebie days and weekends away) and I ended up playing great courses with no real golf experience. Stoke Park, Woburn and Archerfield in Edinburgh had the pleasure of my playing presence back then. I had caught the golfing bug and started playing a bit more socially and in societies. The tennis was slowly getting less and less (although some might say fitness played a part of that) and I made a decision in 2017 that I wanted to properly try golf, so let’s just jump straight in like a bat out of hell and join a club! How lucky were Shortlands!
I was made to feel very welcome from day one and got mixed in and involved on and off the course, mainly from my experience of private members clubs and the necessary voluntary side of them, within a year I was helping build sheds, designing the website, attending most events, all whilst my golf didn’t really improve too much, but I was enjoying the vibe, the new friends I was making, and just the whole atmosphere, and still do.
It is truly an honour and a privilege to be your Captain for 2024, and represent Shortlands Golf Club, our very own Gem in the Valley. With the wonderful Gail by my side representing the Ladies’ section, I hope we can give you a wonderful year.
